Four concepts form the basis of Enershield:

Efficient use of premium materials

Enershield formulations employ high-quality elastomeric polymers that provide a balance of strength, resilience, abrasion-resistance, water-resistance and controlled water vapor permeability.

Enershield delivers high performance at low film thicknesses. Low wet-film thickness results in fast drying times, allowing contractors to complete their work quickly, and minimizing potential damage to the membrane before it has fully cured. 

At joints, penetrations and rough openings that need extra strength, special Sheathing Fabric saturated with Enershield creates a tough, reinforced composite barrier. MaxFlash elastomeric liquid flashing membrane is also designed to provide exceptional performance in these applications.   

One air barrier material for all wall systems

Designed for use behind all claddings and at rough window treatments, Enershield assemblies create a seamless air/water-resistive barrier and flashing system for all walls on your project. Air barriers, by their nature, must be continuous, with flexible and airtight connections to adjacent systems.  The most effective way to maintain a continuous air barrier from a practical perspective is to use one air barrier material for all wall assemblies. This minimizes the need to transition from one air barrier material to another, saving time and eliminating a potential source of air leakage.

Extensive testing to validate performance

Testing performed according to ASTM E2357 Air Leakage of Air Barrier Assemblies has demonstrated that Enershield assemblies provide air barrier performance substantially superior to Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA) requirements.

Since most air barriers must also function as water-resistive barriers, Enershield assemblies have met the rigorous requirements of the ICC-ES AC 212 Acceptance Criteria for Water-Resistive Coatings used as Water-Resistive Barriers on Exterior Sheathing. The AC 212 test protocol specifies testing that simulates wind and earthquake loading and accelerated aging prior to testing for water penetration. It also evaluates resistance to freeze-thaw cycling and several additional parameters. Products meeting ICC-ES AC 212 requirements can provide superior long-term durability.

With the addition by ICC-ES of the ASTM E 2178 Air Permeance of Building Materials test to AC 212, products that meet AC 212 fulfill the requirements of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC).

The International Code Council, in partnership with the American Architectural Manufacturing Association (AAMA), defines performance requirements for flexible flashing materials under the AC 148/AAMA 711 Acceptance Criteria for Flexible Flashing Materials. Enershield-HP and Enershield-I reinforced with Sheathing Fabric meet all of the AC 148 requirements, including the modified ASTM D1970 Nail Sealability after Thermal Cycling test.

Taken together, the testing described above validates use of Enershield-HP and Enershield-I as single material air/water-resistive barrier assemblies for all wall claddings. Window openings, wall penetrations, sheathing joints and the field of the wall can now work together to provide seamless building protection.

Safety and sustainability

Enershield products contribute to jobsite safety in a number of ways, starting with product composition; they are water-based, low-VOC materials. To minimize emissions, Enershield products contain just 21 g/l of VOCs for Enershield-I (less water and exempt solids) or 17 g/l of VOCs for Enershield-HP (less water and exempt solids). Both are well below levels typically found in air barrier materials as well as the maximum allowed by the EPA.

As delivered and applied, they are non-flammable.  After they are on the wall and cured, Enershield products offer ASTM E-84 Class 1 flame spread performance.

Since Enershield products are single-component materials, no mixing is required on the jobsite, and exothermic chemical reactions will not occur.

Prescriptive compliance methods for USGBC's LEED Energy and Atmosphere Prerequisite 2 (Minimum Energy Performance) require air/water-resistive barriers, and are part of an increasing number of state building codes. Studies have shown that air barriers can reduce building energy consumption by up to 40%. In addition, air/water-resistive barriers protect buildings from mold and material decomposition due to moisture within wall systems.

Areas that do not require high strength, for example ASTM C 1177 sheathing, can be effectively coated with Enershield. By providing high performance at low coating thickness (10-mils wet film thickness for Enershield-HP, 26-mils for Enershield-I), Enershield products minimize the environmental burden associated with resource consumption.

Low coating thickness also enables improvements in packaging. BASF supplies Enershield products in reusable/recyclable 5-gallon plastic pails. Cleaning and potential disposal of used 55-gallon drums may no longer be required.
